What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a specific, language-based disorder. The work is derived from the Greek dys (difficulty with) and lex (to speak). Simply stated, dyslexia is trouble with words. Words come in many forms - listening, speaking, reading, spelling, writing, in mathematics, and in organizing, understanding and expressing thought.

A large number of people have this disorder to varying degrees. Some experts estimate that 15-20% of the population is affected by dyslexia. Even though a child with dyslexia may have an average to superior cognitive ability, he experiences surprising difficulty learning language skills. Children with dyslexia benefit from early intervention using a multi-sensory structured language approach.
