What Does the 32º Masonic Learning Center Do for Children with Dyslexia?

The Learning Center was established by the Scottish Rite Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and the Valley of Steubenville, specifically for children grades kindergarten through 12. The Learning Center occupies the former library space in the Steubenville Masonic Temple on North Fourth Street.
The Learning Center provides a comfortable, secure site for children and tutors. The Center's tutoring area contains seven tutoring cubicles and work area with two computers, tutor's reference library and a collection of children's reading books. The office provides space for the Center's Director and Office Assistant and a small conference area. The waiting area is home to a collection of loaned artworks by locally well-known artists.

What Does the Learning Center Provide?

The purpose of the Learning Center is to help children effected by dyslexia learn to read and reach their full potential. The one-on-one Orton-Gillingham lessons are free of charge to children accepted into the program. Selection is based on mental and verbal ability, as well as measures of reading achievement as determined by a psychologist or educational specialist. After entering the program, standardized reading tests and curriculum based measurements of language skills are give in order to monitor the child's progress. Referrals may be made by the parent with the support of teachers, school principals, school psychologists, and doctors.
